APAE DE SÃO PAULO is recruiting Young PhD Researchers to work at the Research Institute

​The Association of Parents and Friends of Intellectually Disabled People from São Paulo (APAE DE SÃO PAULO), Brazil, is a nonprofit civil organization, which promotes prevention and inclusion of the person with Intellectual Disabilities by producing and disseminating knowledge. Its actions range all stages of life, from childhood to the aging process.

Intellectual Disability, according to the World Health Organization, is characterized by a significant reduction in the ability to understand new or complex information and develop new skills (compromise of intelligence). This results in a reduced capacity to live independently (compromised social functioning) that starts before adulthood, with a prolonged effect on development. In the area of prevention of intellectual disabilities, besides its neonatal screening lab, pioneer in the country, APAE DE SÃO PAULO also promotes and supports research, produces and disseminates scientific knowledge through APAE DE SÃO PAULO Institute. In this way, in 2012 APAE DE SÃO PAULO partnered with São Paulo Research Foundation  (FAPESP) with the Program of Young PhD Researchers in Emerging Centers in the following research lines linked to Intellectual Disabilities: 1) Cognition and Behavioral Sciences (areas: Neuropsychology, Neuroscience, Psychology, Psychiatry, Neurology); 2) Neonatal Screening (areas: Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Neurology, Endocrinology, Pediatrics); 3) Molecular Biology/Genetics (areas: Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology); 4) Brain Imaging (areas: Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry, Psychology).

APAE DE SÃO PAULO is recruiting skilled and talented MD and PhD young researchers from all over the world to join our research teams.

Candidates will be working in a multi-disciplinary research environment and in addition to competitive fellowships they will have the opportunity to develop their future career as APAE DE SÃO PAULO research staff.

The selection of candidates will be as follow:
1 - Pre-selection of candidates by the Scientific Committee of APAE-SP
 Period:  6 December 2012 - 31 January 2013 8 February 2013 (extended)
Candidates should send (a) Summary of professional CV; (b) Two letters of recommendation with name and address of the signatory; (c) Summary of current research activity with possible inclusion in the activities of APAE - SP (no more than three pages).  All items should be sent to Dr. Laura Guilhoto, Research Director of the APAE-SP Institute at lauraguilhoto@apaesp.org.br
2 - Results of the pre-selection phase
 Date:  18 February 2013.
 Results will be made via the websites of the APAE-SP and FAPESP  (www.apaesp.org.br and www.fapesp.br).
3 – Application to the FAPESP Young Investigator Award
 Period: 19 February – 15 March 2013
This phase will be entirely conducted by FAPESP and, therefore, applications should strictly follow the recommendations present in the website www.fapesp.br/jp (in English)
4 – Announcement of the results:
 Date:  17 May 2013
 Results will be made via the websites of the APAE-SP and FAPESP  (www.apaesp.org.br and www.fapesp.br).
